Tsleil-Waututh Guardian Program Featured in Vancouver Sun: News Story

“The park is both historically and currently significant.” -Gabriel George

Shortly after signing the Təmtəmíxʷtən/ Belcarra Regional Park Cultural Planning and Co-operation Agreement, Tsleil-Waututh Nation and Metro Vancouver worked together to develop, fund, and implement a Guardian Pilot Program that ran weekly from June to September 2021.

“Our history ties back to the park,” said Gabriel George. “We lost so many villages across Burrard Inlet — this was one village out of many. But the park offers a way to access it.”

While Tsleil-Waututh has had a field crew for decades, we have been working to establish and grow a more collaborative Guardian Program with jurisdictions across the Inlet for many years.

The emphasis of the Program was a collaborative two-way sharing of knowledge with time split equally between TWN members and MVRD staff leading training activities.
