səlilwətaɬ artist team Chris Overes and his daughter Tamia Overes designed the Coast Salish-inspired HSBC SVNS Vancouver medals for this year’s rugby tournament.
The gold medals feature a carving-based design centred on an eagle, which represents strength, leadership, vision, and protection. The composition is based on an original hand-carved eagle created by Chris.
As Chris shares: “The eagle encircles and holds the rugby ball, symbolizing guardianship over the athletes and the honour of achievement represented by the gold medal. “The form line composition emphasizes balance, focus, and unity, with the bird’s powerful wings and gaze reflecting the discipline, resilience, and determination required to compete at the highest level.”
The second aspect of the medal design features flowing Coast Salish shapes arranged in a continuous circular motion around a rugby ball. The interwoven forms represent wind, water, and movement.
