BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE JOB
Reporting to Finance Controller, the General Ledger Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate and timely financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and supporting the organization’s financial operations. This role encompasses preparing journal entries, reconciliations, financial reporting, and assisting with project accounting, payroll, and administrative functions. The position requires strong analytical skills, advanced Excel capabilities, confidentiality, and the ability to work effectively across departments, including with Indigenous communities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The General Ledger Accountant position is responsible for the following key functions.
General Ledger & Month-End Close
• Prepare and post recurring and adjusting journal entries (accruals, prepaids, reclasses).
• Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts on a monthly basis.
• Ensure accuracy and completeness of transactions recorded in the GL.
• Support timely month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing activities.
Account Reconciliations
• Prepare balance sheet reconciliations.
• Investigate and resolve discrepancies or unusual variances in accounts.
• Reconcile bank statements monthly and resolve discrepancies.
Accounts Receivable Support
• Support AR analyst and operational management in day-to-day operations.
• Serve as a backup for AR functions to ensure continuity.
• Support bank deposits
Financial Reporting & Analysis
• Assist in preparation of internal financial statements and management reports.
• Provide supporting schedules for audits and external reporting requirements.
• Analyze variances between budget, forecast, and actual results.
Compliance, Policies & Internal Controls
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and organizational policies.
• Support implementation and monitoring of internal controls.
• Assist with documentation and testing for audits.
Other Duties
• Maintain organized and efficient filing systems for financial documents, contracts, and agreements.
• Support intercompany transactions and consolidations.
• Collaborate with AP, AR, Payroll, and Taxation teams to ensure accurate financial data.
• Assist with process improvement and automation initiatives.
• Perform ad hoc analysis and support special projects as required.

• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding sensitive financial and organizational information.

• Effective communication and time management skills.
• Ability to present financial data and insights clearly to various levels of the organization using different mediums (email, presentations, reports, etc.).
• Strong analytical skills, with the ability to work with and interpret large datasets for reporting and decision-making.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including experience with complex formulas, pivot tables, macros, and data visualization tools.
• Experience handling large amounts of financial data and ensuring accuracy in reporting.
• Ability to resolve conflict with internal/external using tact/diplomacy.
• Ability to foster and maintain relationships, particularly with Indigenous communities in a remote setting.
• Sound judgment and discretion when dealing with sensitive and complex financial matters.
EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• CPA designation or in progress (an asset).
• Three to five years of accounting experience, preferably in general ledger or financial reporting.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls.
• Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Experience working with large datasets, conducting financial analysis, and producing detailed financial reports.
• Proficiency in ERP/accounting systems and Excel.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including data modeling, pivot tables, macros, and Power BI.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
Preferred:
• Previous experience working in a First Nations community and/or organization.
