JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to Climate Action & Sustainability Manager, the Energy & Climate Action Programs Coordinator is responsible for supporting implementation on Tsleil-Waututh Nation (TWN) climate action, energy and greenhouse gas emissions reduction plans and targets; as well as supporting community engagement, community awareness and capacity building on climate action and energy efficiency initiatives.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technical Support:

  • Supports implementation of TWN’s climate action and energy efficiency policies and objectives.
  • Supports implementation, review and updates to the TWN Community Energy Plan and Climate Change Action Plan and completion of action plan progress reports, communications and notifications.
  • Promotes community awareness and capacity building in energy management and climate action, and completes communications, articles and posts on relevant initiatives and ways for community to be involved.
  • Supports the collection, tracking and monitoring data on TWN electric vehicle charging station use and renewable energy production, community-wide energy consumption and GHG emissions.
  • Coordinates and supports TWN community engagement to learn from community knowledge and to inspire action towards achieving community energy conservation and GHG reduction targets.
  • Supports project related and culturally appropriate fieldwork, site monitoring, photo-documentation and reporting.
  • Builds connections with external contacts and other First Nations to explore opportunities for shared learnings and collaboration on climate action and energy management initiatives.
  • Supports the development of grant applications to advance TWN climate action and energy efficiency goals.
  • Attends energy and climate action training workshops and conferences to promote continued learning and capacity building.

 

Administration Support:

  • Provides communication and administrative support for local community and household low carbon and energy efficiency updates, retrofits, waste reduction and sustainable transportation strategies.
  • Attends energy management meetings, workshops and participates in training to grow skills and capacity.
  • Supports TWN community engagement to learn from community knowledge and to inspire action towards achieving community energy conservation and GHG reduction targets.
  • Helps to organize events build education and local experience with energy efficiency, renewable energy, and low carbon resilient opportunities.
  • Builds connections with other First Nations and other external contacts to learn from and share information about energy efficiency, GHG reduction and climate action opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned/required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g. climate action, energy management, sustainability, urban planning, natural resources management).
  • A minimum of 2 years of working experience in a related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
  • Solid experience with and knowledge of working with Indigenous Organizations and/or remote Indigenous communities.
  • Proficient with computers, the Internet and Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc.).
  • Must have valid driver license (BC Class 5) and satisfactory driving record.
  • Criminal records check (vulnerable sector).

 

Preferred:

  • Previous experience working in a First Nations community and/or organization.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Basic knowledge of and experience with greenhouse gas emissions, low carbon opportunities, energy efficiency, renewable energy and green building strategies.
  • Understanding of the current and historical culture of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation and Coast Salish peoples.
  • Self-starter who is comfortable working in the office as well as remotely and supporting a distributed team.
  • Good organizational, problem solving and analytical skills, and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects or assignments and consult with the supervisor as needed.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, creativity and cooperation in adapting to changing work plan priorities.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and engage with the community in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and to manage work plan to meet given deadlines.
  • Demonstrated patience, understanding, willingness to share information, and openness to learning and training opportunities.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of BC indigenous cultures, and ability to work in a dynamic cross-cultural setting.
  • Strong personal interest in climate action/energy conservation and community sustainability.
  • Positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Fast learner, enthusiastic and not afraid to ask questions.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Physical demands:

  • Significant desk work with long periods of manual dexterity activities (keyboard operations, filing)
  • Occasional field work in variable weather
