BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE JOB 

Reporting to Field Program Manager, Environment, the Senior Natural Resources Specialist is responsible for completing the delivery of environmental field programs, including logistical planning mobilization and office tasks related to reporting on the field activities completed in the Tsleil-Waututh territory, with a focus on Burrard Inlet and the Indian River watershed.  The field duties are year-round.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Lead Natural Resources Technician position is responsible for the following key functions.

Field Work/Maintenance of Field Assets: 

  • Fisheries and related field work (fish stock assessments and habitat enhancement efforts including assessments and trail maintenance)
  • Participate in habitat restoration field pre-planning and coordination of activities.
  • Ecosystem monitoring and assessment work related to TLR environmental programs and internal and external project work
  • TWN cultural and community events including community harvests of clams and elk.
  • Attend safety meetings and other TLR meetings with internal and/or external agencies as required.
  • Attend training courses/programs as required for health and safety and machine and equipment operations.
  • Book equipment servicing/maintenance requirements and schedule annual servicing of all vessels and vehicles.
  • Accurately report work activities on timesheet with project codes in UKG.
  • Participate as a representative of the TWN Treaty, Lands and Resources Department team in meetings, as required.
  • Work with external partners when in the field
  • Provide assistance to other TWN projects and departments and other duties, as required.

Administration & Reporting:

  • Schedule daily activities on a weekly basis and communication with established external parties for planned field work with the Nation.
  • Maintaining and synthesizing field notes into annual TWN monitoring reports as part of the programs funding and agreement requirements.
  • Supporting environmental assessments and inventories logistics through annual field planning and review of environmental methodology for existing programs.
  • Annual Field work planning and gear purchases
  • Field work logistics including project coordination and preparation (field methodology, data sheet preparation, and gear mobilization)
  • Report workplace incident reports to FPM, adhering to all workplace health and safety policies, safe work practices and procedures.
  • Recommend necessary and required training for field programs staff.
  • Develop community newsletter each quarter with support from the Lead Natural Resource Technician.
  • Other duties as assigned/required.

CRITICAL SKILLS/COMPLEXITIES OF JOB

  • Knowledge of Tsleil-Waututh Nation culture, traditional territory, and stewardship objectives and initiatives.
  • Strong work ethic, self-motivated and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Punctual, reliable, positive attitude and able to work cohesively with a team.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow direction closely.
  • Ability to take and synthesize field notes for annual field programs reports.
  • Physically fit and competent, working outdoors in variable, and sometimes severe, weather conditions.
  • Comfortable working in and around water (both rivers and marine).
  • Comfortable working and/or traveling by boat.
  • Comfortable communicating with members of the public.
  • Responsible for coordinating weekly field work pre-planning logistics such as ensuring TLR assets are in good working order and coordinating with external and internal partners.
  • Weekly scheduling, equipment oversight, and minor HR issue reporting of field crew to Field Programs Manager

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Required:

•    Post-secondary degree in environmental sciences or a related field or a Fish and Wildlife or related field program certificate with 3-5 years’ work experience in a related field required

•    Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License required with access to a vehicle an asset.

•    Must have Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP), Restricted Operator Card -Maritime (ROC-M) and Small Domestic Vessel Boat Safety (SDV-BS) certifications.

•    Experience working with machinery (e.g. trucks, motors, utility vehicles) for basic maintenance and troubleshooting.

•    Must be flexible and adaptable to changing project tasks and instructions and shifting working priorities and schedules.

•    Experience following handling protocols for environmental and marine biological material.

•    Scientific report writing.

•    Must be able to work with Microsoft Office programs.

Preferred:

•    Previous experience working in a First Nation community and/or organization is preferred.

•    Master’s degree in environmental sciences or related field is an asset
