Temporary – Maternity Leave Coverage- 14 months

JOB SUMMARY:

The role of the Environmental and Community Coordinator is to assist and support in the implementation of the Land, Water, and Environment Program in Treaty, Lands and Resources Department, particularly to coordinate and support community-based programming, including traditional foods programs, TWN’s food fish and distribution program, and other community-based engagement with TLR.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports and coordinates with traditional foods inventory management, food safety and distribution, including:
    • Coordinates and supports TWN food fish and distribution program.
    • Coordinates delivery and on-ground logistics of the TWN Food Fish, the TWN Community Elk Harvest distribution, and in expanding traditional food programs.
    • Liaises with community caterers and picks up traditional food for gatherings and ceremony.
  • Coordinates with other Departments to build and support cross-departmental programming, including:
    • Coordinates the collaborations between TLR and TWN school and elders’ group.
    • Coordinates with the Community Development Department to facilitate community participation in environmental work.
    • Coordinates with the Garden Team for community events and food events.
  • Provides the following administrative support to the wider environmental team:
    • Coordinates schedules and calendars for events and meetings.
    • Supports coordinating and planning conferences.
    • Arranges travel, accommodation, venues and/or catering for meetings and events.
    • Note taking and coordination of notes for external and internal meetings.
    • Supports with data entry for field programs.
  • Coordinates TLR-led community events and community participation.
  • Supports with annual canoe race planning, specifically acquiring permits, TLR coordination and on-the-ground support.
  • Drafts Community notices and communications materials and works with Communications team to distribute.
  • Attends related workshops, First Nation organization forums and TWN’s traditional food working group meetings.
  • Identify new opportunities for community-based engagement with TLR programming, including building on or enhancing existing initiatives.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience volunteering or working within Tsleil-Waututh community is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of TWN history and working in a community setting is an asset Experience with community engagement and facilitation is an asset.
  • Willing and able to complete training such as Food Safe.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient or willing and able to complete training with computers, the Internet and Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, teams etc.)
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations community and/or organization is an asset.
  • Completion of high school diploma.
  • Valid driver’s license or willing and able to apply for driver’s license.

  • Knowledge and appreciation of BC Indigenous cultures, and ability to work in a dynamic cross-cultural setting.

Physical Demands

  • Significant desk work with long periods of manual dexterity activities (keyboard operations, filing).
  • Repetitive actions, such as lifting and bending.

 Environmental Conditions

  • Dynamic environment with multiple demands, changing priorities and constant interruptions.
  • Highly sensitive legal, confidential and political issues and environment.
  • Engagement with other departments, levels of government and First Nations.
  • Occasional work outside normal office hours i.e., canoe races and fish distribution.
