JOB SUMMARY:

The Tsleil-Waututh Nation (TWN) Sacred Trust Initiative is looking for a creative, motivated, experienced communications coordinator to support our communications planning and content, as well as amplify our messaging across digital media platforms.

The Tsleil-Waututh Nation Sacred Trust Initiative is mandated to:

  • stop the proposed Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) tanker and pipeline project,
  • promote the identity of TWN in the broader community as People of the Inlet, and
  • promote the Yes Agenda (engaging in and supporting opportunities to promote Tsleil-Waututh Nation’s proactive stewardship work, sustainable developments, and Tsleil-Waututh law).

As the Communications Coordinator, you are excited to support this mandate through developing and implementing innovative communications strategies that engage external and internal audiences. You are a passionate communicator engaged in conversations around Indigenous rights, social justice, the environment and climate. With the Sacred Trust team, you will have the opportunity to develop communication strategies and responses to current events. Reporting to the Sacred Trust Manager, you are involved in implementing the Sacred Trust and Treaty Lands and Resources (TLR) departments’ communication plans. The CC will plan, execute and assess Sacred Trust communication campaigns carried out predominantly through online media. The CC works with the Sacred Trust Team, Sacred Trust spokespeople, TLR staff, and TWN Communications staff in other programs.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

You will work in consultation with the Sacred Trust (ST) Team, Sacred Trust spokespeople, and TLR to:

  • Meet regularly with ST Team to learn of upcoming events, plan strategy and create content collaboratively;
  • Collaborate with the ST Team and TLR staff to develop, maintain and regularly update an annual communication plan to guide agreed upon strategies;
  • With support from the ST Team, develop, implement and evaluate external/internal communications strategies that include:
  • Communication support for Sacred Trust Initiative and other TLR programs where appropriate,
  • Communications processes and check lists for efficient and timely responses to communication needs including web media content preparation and approval, press releases, press conferences, blog stories, FB stories, reposting/amplification of outside actions/current events,
  • A filing system of communication documents that permit easy reference and rapid information retrieval.
  • Maintain and regularly update the ST media networks (website, Facebook and Twitter) with new content and new information as well as provide ST-related content for the TWN newsletter and TWN Community FB Site, working with the TWN Communications staff to ensure consistency in messaging and brand.
  • Develop multimedia content such as infographics, video, etc.
  • Assist in writing key publications including backgrounders and media advisories; distribute to the ST Team and speakers for review and approval.
  • Respond to day-to-day media relations/media requests including:
    • coordinating communication between external entities, other TWN Communications staff and ST Team as needed.
    • Handle incoming requests from the public or media for interviews or press conferences and put in contact with specific key speakers as needed.
    • Distribute press releases and media advisories via email to media contacts, social media, newswire or other media outlets as necessary.
    • Assist in liaison between staff and Council on new developments, specific media events, press releases or any other issue as needed.
  • Assist in coordinating and preparing Chief and Council, ST Spokespeople and other speakers for media interviews and presentations including preparing speaking notes.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS:

We are seeking an individual who has:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or equivalent
  • Three (3) + years of relevant experience.
  • Based on your portfolio, we may consider alternate combinations of education and relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of communication principles and practices with excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills and strong writing and editorial abilities.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous rights and governance in Canada, as well as current events regarding Indigenous rights and environmental issues;
  • Previous experience working in a First Nations community and/or organization is preferred.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a Criminal Records Check.

 

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE: 

  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information in a trusted and responsible manner as well as the confidence and finesse to manage communications around sensitive and contentious issues.
  • Able to execute projects in a fast-paced, high pressure environment and complete projects within deadlines and budgets.
  • Has demonstrated information management skills and abilities.
  • Can organize, prioritize, and handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Has good working knowledge of Microsoft Office – Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel, and experience with publishing software and graphic design (e.g., adobe, InDesign).
  • Has creative graphics, video filming and editing skills.
  • Has experience with running social media campaigns (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok).
  • Has the capacity to respond nimbly to emerging events.
  • Experience with event coordination such as running press conferences is an asset.
  • Has the interest and ability to develop and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders and work effectively with all levels of staff.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy with a commitment to high quality work.

 

WORKPLACE REQUIREMENTS:

Physical Demands

  • Significant desk work with long periods of sitting and manual dexterity activities (keyboard operations)
  • Lifting or moving audio visual equipment, supplies or materials up to 25lbs may be required

  • Able to maintain a constructive, flexible, open, cooperative demeanor
  • Must model adherence to established systems and processes
  • Ability to work independently, change focus quickly, and pick-up new tasks with minimal instruction
