TWN has the only First Nations kayak and canoe tour business in the Lower Mainland, attracting local and international tourism coverage, including an Air France video and HBO Brazil.
From May to October, we lead cultural tours in traditional style canoes for people from around the world, who get to know our Tsleil-Waututh history. We offer kayak rentals, lessons and tours too, and rainforest walking tours.
Our leaders decided to launch Takaya eco tours because we have travelled these waters since time out of mind and evolved from this inlet. Every First Nation has different traditions and history. With Takaya Tours, we have a way to explain the unique history of our ancestors to tourists and local students. We paddle into Indian arm and showcase ancestral village sites with pictographs from thousands of years ago, telling the history and legends of our ancestors, in 25-foot ocean-going canoes like the ones they paddled. We teach people how to say canoe, paddle and life jacket in our language, Hunq’eme’nem. Visitors come away with a sense of our strong cultural pride and identity.
